New Product - Level Ground Fair Trade Organic Coffee

This past Saturday, at our ecoeverything launch party, we served free Level Ground Trading fair trade and organic coffee to our holiday shoppers. Level Ground donated the coffee to our event to enhance the experience of our customers, and for that we thank them SO much! They are a fabulous company - a true leader in the fair trade and eco-friendly world and not to mention a leader in business community involvement here in Victoria.

New Name - New Look - Same Values

Fiber Options Victoria is soon to be Ecoeverything. We are currently making the transition over to this new name and are excited to celebrate with you! Please join us on Saturday December 12th for our launch party. From 10-7 we will be offering our loyal customers with free beverages, sales, our new eco-stocking stuffer area, a chance to join our new gift registry service, and a chance to win one of four $25.00 gift cards to the store. For more information, please feel free to email us at victoria@ecoeverything.com

Why the new name and look?

Since 1997, Fiber Options in Tofino BC has been offering our community with the best eco-friendly clothing and accessories that we could find. In 2000, we opened in Victoria and have carried on doing the same. Back in the late nineties when we opened, the eco-products available were mainly natural clothing and tree-free paper products. The vision however, right from the start of our first store, was to have a store that carried everything eco. With a primary focus on clothing for men and women, we wanted to be able to also offer our communities with the best in baby items, accessories, bed and bath items, home accessories, and gift ideas. Well, we are now making the transition to do just that. We have launched new product lines in the store for the Holiday 2009 season including bamboo charcoal deodorizers, and rayon from bamboo towels and bathrobes. More new items are set to arrive before Christmas, so be sure to check back in regularly!

"We Day" 2009

Today marked the third annual 'We Day'. It is the largest youth empowerment event of its kind, and it was held today in Vancouver, and will be held again in Toronto on October 5th. How does this connect to us? In many, many ways.....

'We Day' is a Free the Children initiative. Free the Children is a non profit that started in Canada in 1995. A young boy, by the name of Craig Kielburger, started this organization at the age of 12. At the age of TWELVE he got together 11 school friends to start fighting against child labour. What started in 1995 as what seemed like a relatively small movement, has now turned into something that has touched youth worldwide. Free the Children program's are across Canada, empowering youth with knowledge, strength and momentum to know that they can change the world. Along with Free Children, is an initiative called 'Me to We'. Me to We is a clothing line, which we are now selling in our stores. The line directly funds the Free the Children program. 50% of the profits from Me to We sales goes directly to Free the Children. The rest of the profits go back into the growing the clothing line.

This is why we decided to start carrying the Me to We line, as it fully matched our ethics and values. The clothing items are all made in Canada and are all made out of eco-friendly fabrics. However, I don't think we quite realized the impact the clothing line would have until a few months ago. You see, Me to We is more than just clothing...its about relationships, stories and a movement that is changing youth across Canada. Stories from customers who have met Craig Kielburger. Stories from customers whose kids or grand kids have fundraised for Free the Children and have had their lives enriched from the organization. Or, stories from customers who have attended these annual 'We Day' events. The stories have brought people together to talk about real issues, that go beyond just buying a shirt in a local store. The stories have created relationships between customers and our staff, and have most importantly awakened our awareness for what more we could be doing. It is reasons like this that I believe my family does what is does with these smalls businesses here in Victoria and Tofino. There is a movement happening. A movement towards fairly traded products and environmentally friendlier choices being made. We are so proud to be a part of that.

So, with that said.....I hope my mum, a school teacher here in Victoria had an empowering time with her children from school at the We Day celebration today. I also hope her friend, a school teacher in Vancouver had a day to remember as the Dalai Lama spoke at We Day. And, I hope my uncle, the founder of this business I work for, had an enlightening day as he sat in GM place and realized what we are contributing to, and how we can do even more in years to come.

Want to learn more? Click here.

May you all have a 'Me to We' kind of year ahead :)

A Thank You Letter From BC Transit

Recently we received a thank you letter from BC Transit, thanking us for our donation of an organic cotton t-shirt. Why would we donate something to BC Transit you ask? And why are we blogging about it? Well - we donated this prize to the new BC Transit Green Team. Some of the employees at BC Transit have recently made a Green Pledge to lower their greenhouse gas emissions by partaking in a sustainable behaviour of their choice. We thought it was pretty cool that businesses like this are becoming more forward thinking, and we wanted to be a part of it! The thank you letter, from BC Transit employee Michael Silzer, also had some interesting facts about BC Transit that we thought we would share....
At the end of 2008 BC Transit served 1.4 million B.C. residents and provided 50 million annual rides with a fleet of 860 buses and vans. With the introduction of the province's Climate Action Plan, and the Provincial Transit Plan in 2008, BC Transit's environmental policy has been enhanced to reflect a carbon neutral goal.
Yay for alternative transit! Now one of their employees will also learn not only how we can change the world by reducing our car emissions, but also by changing our shirt!

The BEST Leggings!

Our favourite leggings have arrived!
Effort's basic black bamboo leggings have made their way back to our stores as the staple item for fall. The leggings are an amazing blend of 92% bamboo and 8% spandex. Most bamboo clothing is blended with cotton, or organic cotton, so being that these are almost 100% bamboo makes them unique! The natural properties of bamboo make it a no brainer to make bamboo leggings a must have for your fall wardrobe! Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial, extremely durable, and holds dye colours extremely well. Meaning that you will have these leggings for years to come, AND they will be the same pure black colour as when you bought them. Our staff can attest to all of these amazing qualities, as they have become one of their favourite items! Check out Fiber Options Victoria, or Ecoeverything Tofino for this new item, or call us toll free at 1-800-381-2138

Go Green or Bust

"Go Green or Bust - The Birth of a New Civilization"

This is an upcoming lecture event at Royal Roads University on Tuesday August 4th, 2009 that we think is pretty great! Here is a bit about it...

Every generation faces unique challenges. Many have been enormous, such as ending slavery, defeating fascism, winning the vote for all women, and winning
civil rights for people of all races. Each of these struggles has been long and difficult, but
in their successes they have changed the world.

For the challenge we face today the stakes could notbe higher, for if we fail, we lose everything. Earthsecosystems and humanitys cultures and civilization
cannot withstand a 6C degree rise in
temperature, which is our current trajectory, due to climate change.

In succeeding, however, we will transform our civilization forever,
and future generations will accept environmental sustainability as
one of the fundamental precepts of a civilized life on Earth,
alongside justice, freedom of speech, and human rights.
If we are to live in harmony with Gaia, and create a new civilization,
we must go green or bust.

Guy Dauncey is a speaker, author, and organizer who works to develop
a positive vision of a sustainable future, and to translate that vision into action.

He is President of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, and author
of the award-winning books Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global
Climate Change; Cancer: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic, and
7 other titles. His new book The Climate Challenge: 101 Solutions to
Global Warming will be published in November 2009.

He is also Executive Director of The Solutions Project; and
Publisher of EcoNews, a monthly newsletter that promotes the vision
of a sustainable Vancouver Island. His home page is www.earthfuture.com

Lecture Admission: Donation at the Door. Proceeds from this lecture
support the Bateman Bursary for learners in the Master of Arts and
Environmental Education and Communication Program. The Mews Lounge
is Building #4 on this campus map.

Organic Islands in 3 Minutes and 11 Seconds!

On July 4th and 5th, our Victoria location participated in the 5th annual Organic Islands Festival. It was an amazing weekend filled with so many wonderful goodies including live music, shopping, food sampling, education...and so much more!

This video was just posted to the Organic Islands Facebook page, and I could not resist posting it to our store blog! It is a great snapshot of the festival. The shot is of the 'Village' area, where we had our booth. The green tent that you see in the center of the shot is ours so you can see what we were up to for the three days of the festival - and just how many people we got to meet and talk to! It was such a great time. Many thanks to our friend Deb Morse, and her team of amazing staff who made it all happen!

Thank You Xavier Rudd!

Last Tuesday, a good lookin' fellow strolled into Fiber Options Naturals in Victoria. One of our staff members struck up conversation with the customer, and soon found out that he was from Australia. Being that we have amazingly personable and perceptive staff, she then noticed that the ruggedly handsome man had a picture of a didgeridoo on his t-shirt. The staff member, looking for things to talk about with the man, then asked "Oh, are you by chance familiar with Xavier Rudd?" (as we often have played his music in the store) and the customer answered, "Why yes...that's me...". Yes - Xavier Rudd was shopping at Fiber Options and we did not recognize the poor guy!!!

He ended up spending quite some time in the shop, and before he left, he kindly added our staff members to the guest list of the show he was performing that night.

So....thank you Xavier Rudd! Thank you for shopping at Fiber Options Naturals, for 'guest listing' our staff, and also for choosing sweat shop free and organic t-shirt options for your official "Xavier Rudd" merchandise!

P.S...the show was fabulous!

Fiber Options Naturals Victoria Donates to Organic Islands Volunteers!

However, we would like to tell you in THIS post about how proud we were to donate $50.00 worth of gift certificates to the volunteers at the festival. Without them, the festival would not have been possible. Their efforts were not unnoticed this weekend. Fiber Options would truly like to thank all of those who volunteered their time to help to make things run as smoothly as they did.
A special thank you to Deb, Rachelle, Annalea, and the rest of the Organic Islands staff for all of their hard work as well! It was a pleasure to yet again be a part of this wonderful festival and we are already looking forward to next year.

We Attend the DVBA AGM

Today Fiber Options Naturals Victoria attended the annual AGM for the DVBA, or Downtown Victoria Business Association. Fiber Options Naturals is a proud member of this wonderful organization. The event today was held at the Laurel Point Inn in their gorgeous dining room. The room was a buzz with local business men and woman, small business owners, and local politicians. The DVBA has been an amazing resource for small businesses like Fiber Options Naturals. It's programs help fund and develop initiatives such as the annual Canada Day celebrations, or the 'LoJo' ad campaign and branding, which we are a part of, being located on Lower Johnson!

Here is an excerpt from their website describing just exactly what the DVBA is all about...

Established on January 13, 2005, the Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA) is Victoria's voice and advocate for a vibrant and prosperous Downtown. Our mission is to make Downtown Victoria the destination of choice for Greater Victoria residents and visitors - for shopping, dining, entertainment, and other services.
The DVBA participates in collaborative initiatives to market, beautify, and enhance the Downtown business area, and to provide a clean, safe, and welcoming business environment. We are a non-profit, membership-based organization, funded by a levy assessment on properties within our boundaries

Fiber Options Naturals at The Hair Garden Salon

On Thursday June 4th, Fiber Options Naturals Victoria attended an open house at The Hair Garden Salon. The event was a part of the VBN's Member Hosted Open House series. It was an evening of networking in the intimate and gorgeous setting of The Hair Garden Salon. The Hair Garden is owned and operated by the spunky and passionate Jennifer Davies. The Salon is located in the Railyards, and is a home based business. It is an eco-friendly, ammonia free zone, where the features of 20% off Mom Makeover Mondays, and "Baby Sitter on Board" are exceptionally great for mums looking to be pampered in a kid friendly zone! We had a great time with this fellow VBN and Green Collective member. We think it is a great service that Jennifer is offering, so we decided to feature it on our blog!

Supplier Spotlight : Brandwear Basics

Recently, we have received many comments on how 'great the new colours are' of the new Spring/Summer merchandise that has arrived in our stores. While we have many great suppliers using many gorgeous colour palettes, the splashiest of the splashy very well may be our Brandwear Basics line!

Brandwear is a relatively new line to our stores. Focusing on basics for everyday men and women, the line offers our customers affordable and eco-friendly staple pieces for their wardrobe.

Why are we carrying Brandwear Basics? Many, many reasons!!!....

- Brandwear in our stores is made out of Bamboo - a renewable resource
- It is Made in Canada!
- Even better....it is made in Vancouver...so it is a local BC based business, employing BC residents!

Style Conscious Student Models

On May 23rd, fashions from Fiber Options Naturals were showcased in the Style Conscious Fashion Show held at Mt. Doug Secondary in Victoria BC. The show, organized by VIDEA, showcased fashions made of environmentally friendly fabrics and clothing made in socially responsible ways. We had three students visit us from Mt. Doug Secondary and Lambrick Park Secondary to get outfitted in our lastest Spring Eco Apparel.
We felt inspired that high school students were becoming introduced to eco-friendly alternatives and we truly commend VIDEA, Mt. Doug Secondary, and all of the other participating high schools, for organizing such a fun - yet educational event.

Here are some pictures from the fittings with the models at Fiber Options Naturals! We had fun with the urban canvas we have behind our downtown Victoria location!

A Thank You to Kama Soap

Kama Soap has been a staple at the Fiber Options Naturals and Ecoeverything Stores for over a decade. The fragrant scent of the all natural soaps has become the familiar and inviting aroma that our customers associate with our stores.
The soaps are handmade with all natural ingredients on Saltspring Island. If you visit the Ganges Market in the summer time, you may recognize the brand, as they have been a staple vendor there for years as well. Our customers LOVE Kama soaps. The moisturizing and long lasting properties of the soap (along with the amazing scents) are what keep our regular soap customers returning again and again. While the Mint Tea Tree seems to be the most popular, Kama Soaps creates a plethora of over a dozen decadent kinds of soaps. All are made with different herbs and grains to add colour and texture, and a large amount of essential oils so that you are not left guessing which soap is which!
We are profiling Kama Soaps here on our blog for two reasons. We would like to first acknowledge the amazing quality of product that Sharon and her team have provided us since 1998. As well, we would like to provide them with a formal thank you for their contribution to our Victoria Earth Day 2009 Green Goodie Giveaway. They partnered with us to provide over 200 customers with free Kama Soap Tote Bags, and free Kama Bars of Soap! The Earth Day Celebration was a huge success, as it created awareness about Earth Day in an extremely fun way!
Kama Soaps are available at Fiber Options Naturals Tofino, and Fiber Options Naturals Victoria. Small and Large bars are available, as well as an assortment of bath salts, soaps on a rope, and specialty baby and complexion bars.
If you would like to order products through Fiber Options Naturals, please do not hesitate to call us at 1-800-381-2138 or email us at contact@ecoeverything.com

Values Based Business Network

Fiber Options Naturals Victoria is a charter member of the Victoria Values Based Business Network, or VBN for short. We would like to profile this great organization in our blog, as it has provided us with great networking and educational opportunities since its start in 2004. The VBN is southern Vancouver Island's only organization specifically designed for progressive businesses. It is a place where we have gone to meet, mingle with, and learn from other sustainable and values based businesses in town. The VBN provides monthly networking opportunities as well as many educational events such as workshops and panel discussions. Fiber Options Naturals wanted to give back to this great organization, and so a few months ago, our Victoria Store Manager ran for a VBN board position. She was elected on, and has been excited to be working with them ever since. Community involvement is a huge part of Fiber Options' Values, so it could not have been a better fit to have a Fiber Options' representative serving on the VBN board!

Welcome to Our New Blog!

We at Fiber Options Naturals, and Ecoeverything, are excited to introduce a NEW BLOG for our customers and friends! This is a combined blog for our 4 locations of eco-friendly retail stores. We have locations in Victoria, and Tofino BC. We started in 1997 in Tofino, with the first Fiber Options Naturals store. We had a vision to help create an economy based on environmental and social sustainability. With that in mind, we opened our doors to the first store as idealists, at a time when eco-friendly clothing, home items, and accessories, where not easy to come by! In 2000 we opened a Fiber Options Naturals in Victoria. In recent years, we added a third store, Ecoeverything, to our family of businesses. This was always the name of our website, http://www.ecoeverything.com/, and our goal for our stores - to carry everything 'eco'. Therefore it was a natural choice to name our large Tofino location just that. And - as if we weren't already busy enough, we recently opened up a sister store, Cedar Corner Art Gallery, to showcase the amazing artwork created by many brilliant artists here on Vancouver Island.

The Ecoeverything and Fiber Options Naturals stores carry a wide range of eco-friendly clothing, accessories, body care products, and home accessories. You can find clothing made out of organic cotton, soy, bamboo, hemp, merino wool, tencel, modal, recycled fabrics, and much much more! We also house a great selection of eco-friendly accessories including hats, bags, jewelry, scarfs etc.., as well as a fantastic section of locally made - all natural body care products. It doesn't stop there either! We also carry luxurious goodies for your home. You will find smaller gift items such as soy and beeswax candles in our stores, and larger items such as organic bedding and towel sets. The products are not only environmentally friendly, but are also all made in a socially responsible manner.

Our blog is designed to let our customers and friends know about special in-store events, and community projects that we are often involved with. We are committed to a triple bottom line business model. This means that we are equally concerned about our social responsibility and environmental responsibility, as much as our profits. We therefore truly care about our communities, and we get involved wherever and whenever we can!
This blog is also designed to be an information outlet for eco-friendly tips and tricks, a resource guide for eco-friendly fabric information, and a place where people can learn about values based business practices.

We hope you enjoy it!
